The invention and growing popularity in educational institutions of empiricism was a prime mover in revolutionising scientific method and investigation.

I think the scientific revolution was kick started when early discoverers found out that the world was not flat. This made people doubt the teachings of the ancient Greeks on which much of their knowledge at that time was based. Eventually learned people set out to discover for themselves what made the Earth tick.

I think the start of a dark age is now under way. It has become a time of everyone for him or herself and many of the safeguards that society had put in place to protect itself has gradually been eroded away. This is shown by the tolerating of what was formerly wrong or immoral now becoming acceptable.

Another Dark Age could be very likely. Civilization hangs by a thread at the best of times. Just look what happens when there's a power cut. Without so simple a thing as electricity the world starts to look very different.
