Estrogen is the predominent hormone produced in the beginning of a woman's cycle. It in itself has very little to do with your period, what it does have an effect on is ovulation. The estrogen causes you to ovulate, after you ovulate your body produces progesterone. If conception doesn't occur then the progesterone levels taper off inducing your period. I hope that made sense.
