8 or 9 hours is my best guestimate.

Legoland is near San Diego, which is not a feasible daytrip from San Francisco. California is a HUGE state.
From the Bay Bridge, you need to take the "MacArthur Freeway" I-580 East for about 1 1/2 hours. Then you'll have to drive the "Golden State Freeway" I-5 South for at least 7 hours.
As an alternative, the San Francisco area does have three theme parks: Paramount's Great America, Six Flags Marine World, and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. These parks are all within 1 hour's drive from the city.
If you have very young children, Marine World and Santa Cruz will probably appeal to them more than roller coaster heavy Great America.
Note also that only Santa Cruz is open during the winter (and only during weekends and holidays). The other two open for business at the end of March.

Legoland is in Carlsbad which is just north of San Diego. If you go straight through from SF you are looking at about a 8 hour drive. However, if you are going with kids you will need to stop so give yourself at least 10 hours.
You will want to take I-5 all the way down. The stretch through Central CA is very boring and once you hit LA expect traffic.

Well, Legoland is in Carlsbad--so you'll have an 8-10 hour drive depending on how fast you go...We loved Legoland--It is defintely worth it--and if you can spare the time to stop over at places midway and see things it could work. If you're only planning on being in SF, then it's probably too far of a drive!

I agree with the 8 to 9 hours - make sure you take 5 though - its boring but faster.
