It is true, I grew up in NJ, then after age 29 have lived in the south. Most people in the north are rude and unfreindly. In the south they are very freindly and a perfect stranger will strike up a conversation with you about anything.

I've never been up north, but I've heard thats how they react. Down in South Georgia we say hello to everyone and we wave at people we drive by on the street.

well being from the true north (canada) I can tell you i dont think its a southern or northern thing, as most everyone here would respond with a hello back and possibly a conversation if so inclined.
I challenge you to test this notion in the U.S though

nope i used to live in Colorado (which by the way is the coolest state in the whole counrty-- yaya for being able to ski three times a week!) and my buddy and i (holy crap i miss her) would walk to the bookstore and see how many people we could get to wave back at us. it was 13... and we got passed by like 15... does that help?
actually, you can't really generalize it like that.... no matter where people come from, they will anlways be themseles. we are not RUDE... i see smiles and waves all the time!
God Bless America (which i am no longer living in, unfortunalty)

I hear that people up north are just rude and that they don't want you to speak to them. I live in the south and it is just a regular occurrance to speak to everyone that you come across. Now it's not always like that but mostly it's true.

Totally 100% TRUE! I'm from the south. South Carolina to be precise.Last year I spent six months in Niagara Falls,NY.The worst six months of my life.I would have preferred to be in agonizing labor for six months down here than to spend one more week up there!Seriously!

It is very true...people up north aren't quite so open to people they don't know like in the south.
