Geelong is really nice but a little far from the city.

It really depends on what you are looking for in regard to what is the best for you.
If you are single and looking for lots of nightlife, then inner suburbs are the go. Tho I think the nightrider buses (which leave the city after midnight and virtually follow the train line) still are going so living further out is no real hassle that way.
In each suburb there are the good and bad parts, though the percentages do vary. Rental and house prices do vary as well.
And obviously they havent seen the more salubrious bits of Broadmeadows.
Usually the Eastern suburbs can be said to be the "better" part of Melbourne. South East developing. Northern and Western "poorer". The inner suburbs all have their own pros and cons and each have their beautiful parts.
The best way is to have a look for yourself and see what suits and appeals to you.

Wonder why Apple A thinks Ringwood is a hole .... LOL It covers a wide area and has its very wealthy parts as well as not so wealthy and has all amenities, but that is their opinion.

My favourite is Fitzroy. Great night life and food. You can walk to the city. Plenty of parks and gardens. It can be hard to get a place if you are on a budget (its become fairly gentrified) so Brunswick or Northcote might be more affordable alternatives.

Toorak - rich
Broadmeadows - poor
St Kilda - overrated
South Yarra - pretentious
Richmond - eclectic
Carlton - cool
Lilydale - far
Ringwood - hole
Northcote - now
Brunswick - multicultural
Flemington - underrated
Seddon - secret
Geelong - NOT PART OF MELBOURNE!!!!

G'day,
Hmmm... this is a hard one to answer. You may want to read the link I have provided from The Age newspaper below.
I used to live in Collingwood and Clifton Hill with my parents. When I got married in 2000 and looking for our own place. The obvious path will be to look around the area that I have been lived in. However after searching for awhile we realised that with our budget of about , we could only afford a run-down house that we need to renovate extensively. We were looking further and further towards East and South East area, until we reach Rowville and felt that it becomes ridiculously too far, not to mention the peak-hour traffic report that you usually hear from the radio on the M1.
We finally settle in Point Cook, west of Melbourne. It is about 20min from the city via Westgate Freeway with plenty of new estates being opened, affordable price, close to the sea and infrastructure that aimed for young families. Just try and have a look yourself if you are interested to find out.

Depends what you're after. Peace and quiet, come to the Outer Eastern suburbs like Lilydale, Yarra Glen, the Yarra Valley a wine making region. just an hour drive to the city. but if you like class and designer shops, yes go for expensive Toorak/Camberwell.
Personally, i hate being that close to the city, so busy. I like places where you don't have to pay for parking wherever you go.
If you want to live in a new estate with all the facilities close by that you need, try Caroline Springs or Delfin development areas. They're supposed to be brilliant places to live.

Yarraville is the best suburb. The centre of Yarraville is only 4 stations from the city less than 10kms away. The centre of the suburb has a very good vibe with coffes shops and trendy places to relax. The suburb has a country feel to it as it has cobblestoned streets in the main district. The area is safe and public transport is everywhere. The suburb is not far from one of melbourne's biggest shopping centres Highpoint. Also the beach at nearby williamstown is not far away at all. Yarraville is a lovely secluded suburb!!

I lived in many different neighborhoods (Clayton, Burwood, Glen Iris, Toorak, South Yarra and Southbank) I would say I liked Toorak and Glen Iris the best for the peace, less congestion, away from the city but near enough :)

Toorak and Brighton are the wealthiest
St Kilda is happening, but has a very seedy side and crime up to the wazoo.
