Think of this: the XFL was a venture between the WWF (Wrold Wrestling Federation) and broadcast giant NBC (who didn't have a NFL deal back then)

The TV ratings fell significantly after the first month of the season (the March, 31st game drew a 1.5 rating.. the lowest for a primetime show in TV history at that time), causing NBC to pull out of the deal to televise games. Though XFL (and WWF) chairman Vince McMahon said the league would continue with cable partners, TNN and UPN, pressure from the two cable outlets led McMahon to cancel the second XFL season. UPN was supposedly demanding the "WWF Smackdown", which it aired, be cut from 2 hours to a 90 minute show.

Also a key factor: lack of respect from sports media. Games were treated more as WWF events, as opposed to legitmate pro sports. Newspapers and TV News rarely reported scores or showed highlights, despite that fact that it was innovative football.

My main gripe with the XFL was the false advertising. I thought it was going to be a real sporting event which allowed fighting. In the pilot they showed people jumping over barrels, fighting, explosions, hitting each other with helmets, 2 X 4's, etc. You watch the show, and it SUCKED! It was so bad I can't put it into words. No sports fan took it serious like they wanted, or sports outlets (ESPN). It should have been canceled after 4 episodes, that's when there were virtually no viewers.

The same reason all other leagues have folded. Not enough money and commitment. The NFL is just too entrenched to be beaten.

Because it was really bad football highlighted with ridiculous Pro-Wrestling type cheesy "entertainment".

It was simply an awful product and they lost so much money that they literally could not afford to play another season. Their original contract called for 2 seasons, but they couldn't make it.

Because it was an awful excuse for football, poor ratings, lack of sponsors, low attendance....you name it and it went wrong for them. I was glad to see it disappear.
