"To get to our situation, those before us, like the soldiers who fought for equality and liberty in the civil war, had to work for it."

Is there anything wrong with this sentence? I don't think there is but my sister thinks so.

The sentence structure seems to be ok, but the sentence is very confusing in meaning. What is "our situation"? Do you mean, "We are where we are today because of the sacrifices of those who went before us, such as the soldiers who died fighting for equality and liberty in the Civil War."

It's awkward-sounding and unclear. For instance, what do you mean by "our situation"? If you are trying to say that in order for people to have a better life, they had to first live through the Civil War, then state that more clearly.
