I heard a long time ago that it is because back during the war when servicemen would light cigarettes that by the time the match got to the third guy that was all the time needed for a sniper or someone to be able to find them exactly and kill the third guy.

It's a ridiculous superstition, similar to Astrology, in which people look to associate the coincidental into some "greater cosmic force". It's a methodology of trying to assert some form of "grand design" that is beyond our comprehension, and taking marginallly unrelated events and trying to find commonality in them. Linking the death of Gerald Ford to the death of James Brown is akin to linking your own ingrown toenail to Arnold Schwarzenegger breaking his femur. There's no correlation between Ford and Brown other than they were both "known names", and that Gerald Ford may have listened to a James Brown song, or that James Brown may have recorded a few songs while Ford was President, which amounts to nothing to a Eskimo native that has never heard of either of them.

On average, there are 1.8 deaths per second worldwide, suggesting that "death comes in three's" about every 1.2 seconds.

Only idiots say that. Seriously. When one person dies, they perk up out of their stupor long enough to notice 3 sequential deaths, then they feel vindicated.

NOTHING TO IT.

(Btw, Peter Boyle, James Brown, and Ger Ford is 3, if you started counting at the right moment. Doh, but wait... where does Frank Stanton, former chariman of CBS for over 30 years fit in? Face it, guys, a lot of people are dying at any given moment; a few are bound to be famous.)
