I am owed hundreds of pounds from a proffesional tradesman. He has told me that he has declared bankrupt, but I have no proof. I cannot find out where, when and if. So, is there a list of bankrupt people so I can check up whether he is, or is just getting out of paying me?

You should search the individual insolvency register. Instructions are here:

http://www.insolvency.gov.uk/guidanceleaflets/iir/iir.htm

Then get in touch with his trustee in bankruptcy to declare yourself as a creditor.

If he's trading as a business, you need to check Companies House to see if the company has been dissolved. Use the WebCheck button. Then contact the administrator or liquidator as above.

Go to the insolvency service website (google it - cant remember it offhand)
He will have to have filed for bankruptcy in the nearest county court to where he lives, or works if that in a different area.
You will have to know which Official Receivers office serves that court (the court can tell you that).
Once you know the office, search for the relevant court under that office's area.
You can search for him either by name or trading name.
the individual search will show you his address and date of birth (if he gave them, which he should have done) so if you know these you can check if its really him.
If it is, you should contact that court as one of his creditors, Even if he's bankrupt, you may get some pay out.

he should be able to provide you with documents in order to prove he is actually Bankrupt. If he can't then he is not. Try getting a copy of his credit report, that will definately show you. Or just take him to court and let them figure it out

Get a solicitor to find out ..or sue him and let him reply ..
But most important he should have shown you as a creditor at the bankruptcy proceedings and at the bankruptcy court..because he didn't do this ..you can go after him for what his got ..check the bankruptcy house on line ..his name should be on there ..if it isn't he is lying
..good luck

He should be able to provide you with the court documents to prove it but if he really owes you as much as you say... you should have been listed as one of the debtors in the case.

Best of Luck

You can go to the court house. This is legal because court proceedings are open to the public to view.

It should be on his credit report, and if he wants his debt to be discharged he should show you his discharge papers. You may want to take him to small claims court.
