Either of your subjects would make for a good choice as their lives were filled with Triumph and Tragedy. I think Maria’s greatest Triumph was having her way with the royal purse! Her greatest tragedy was in becoming the scapegoat for all the problems of the crown. She really didn’t deserve that reputation. You can read about her here:

Henry the VIII would also exemplify your theme. He processed a brilliant, although manipulative, mind and wielded unmerciful power. But this triumph of abuse is what brought on one of the greatest tragedies of the British crown. In the end, he died a popeless catholic. Here is an essay that should get you started on you project.

Make sure to check the citation listed on the above essays to track back to the primary sources of the radical points made in the essays. A good project makes a statement and not just regurgitates an encyclopedia article.

Since this is obviously for national history day I would recommend a few ideas:

1. Do a topic you are interested in. These can be a huge amount of work and if you pick something because someone else recommended it to you and you arent into it, then you'll flame out quickly.

2. Make sure that whatever you DO decide on is a topic that has PRIMARY historical resources. It's fun to pick some obscure historical event or figure but if all you can find about your topic are a few references in an obscure book and some unreliable internet resource (like wikipedia) then you'll have a tough time putting together a good project. MAke sure there are sources written by someone personally involved in your topic. It's a Nat'l Hist day requirement.

3. Have fun with it. My teachers made medo it in HS and I was pissed at first because it was alot of work. But both years I went to the state competition and a friend ofmine won a small scholarship. We had a blast at the state competition too.

Good luck and happy new year.

The Spanish Empire is a good example of both, first they conquered a whole continent in the 1500s and then, 1898, the year that marked the end of the Spanish Empire with the defeat that sealed the end of it, against the US.
There is a lot of information on this issue.
Good Luck.

I would suggest that you should do the rise and fall of an empire such as the British or Roman Empires. You can talk about how they came to be so powerful and what occurred that brought their downfall.

Instead of doing Henry VIII, how about one of his wives? His first wife, Catherine of Aragon, would be great.
