I am going to Vegas the beginning of April. What type of clothes should I pack? Shorts? Sweaters? Both? Should I take a swimming suit, or is it too early for that?

For a good look at the typical weather in Las Vegas for a given time period look at http://www.lasvegasweather.us . In general, the beginning of April is a transitional time for Vegas, and shorts and bathing suits are a possibility, but cooler weather is alos very possible. You can probably count on the nights to be cool. One thing I have noticed about April is it's the time of year that I get sun burned if I'm not careful, it's not so hot that I'm immediately reminded to use sun screen, but it's very sunny and often so pleasant that I'll spend hours in the sun.

April can be a fluctuating month in Vegas. It can be anywhere from 60-100. Most likely weather would be 75 to 80 during the day and around 65 after the sun goes down.
I would pack for summer weather and then bring a sweater/sweatshirt or windbreaker just incase you get unlucky and the weather is chilly. Especially during the evenings or early mornings. Most likely it wont be cool your entire state anyway. Bring your bathing suit as even if it is cooler then normal, most pools are heated and it will probablyl be sunny and comfortable for swimming.

Las Vegas is the land where anything goes fashion-wise. Bring comfy clothes for daytime - shorts, khakis, or jeans and tshirts are fine for daytime. Good comfortable walking shoes are a MUST!! A light jacket or sweater for evening is probably a good plan too...
Bring a swimsuit - it'll be probably 80-ish there...
For nighttime - depends on what you're gonna do. To hang in the casino and gamble - daytime wear is fine. For a nice restuarant or club or a show, dress up a little. Dress pants and sports shirt for guys and either a casual dress or top and skirt or nice dressy pants are good for women.

I am going in April as well. We (people from work) go every other year. I brings summer clothes (short etc), a bathing suit, and pants and a sweater for the cooler evenings.

One nice skirt that can be dressed up or down is always great, and make sure it is a material that does not wrinkle. A tank top, short sleeve shirt,and a long sleeve shirt, and swimming suit.
Don't forget comfortable shoes; you'll walk alot!
Rid the coasters for me!
