"living on the edge" is assigned by boring, no-different people who, w/ respect to the phrase, cannot do the things that the people their describing r doing. I dont think I ever thought when climbing or diving or all the other "get off ur ***" stuff I do that I'm living on the edge just becouse I could get hurt.
A persons lifestyle or life should and better be all the things u r young or o--d not just what the wild 18 yr old hair in the *** pinocio'd u ta do.
Of course I sleep deeper after working 8-10 hr's a day and Kayaking 4's till after dark.
So if ur asking maybe ur just over-think'n.

I've always took living on the edge to mean you are one decision or one action away from completely ruining your life. It's usually associated with the young because it is traditionally a time when you can make mistakes and still fix your life. I think, however, it is spreading to people in all age groups. Between family issues financial struggles and work problems, I think many are one paycheck, or one choice from radically changing their way of life and falling off the edge, so to speak.

I am 36, have a wife and 2 kids and live life on the edge much more now than I ever did. I am just not as stupid as I used to be.
What does it mean? Putting yourself in risky situations, be it physical, mental, or otherwise. Now bring on the double black diamonds ;)

I saw a tv-show with 2 fellas in their 40s/50s... wanting to take more risk... live on the edge. So they went base jumping. It was in Norway. Jump off a cliff in to water below... however their was a terrible rock jutting out mid-way. It was an organised tv show too with a base jumping expert (who was like 25)... and the guy went for it... and smacked his head and died.
Live on the edge yes... but no reason to take foolish extra risky chances with it.

I'll tell you what it DOESN'T mean...
Being so stuck in a rut that you feel safe and fuzzy; compelled to run around in the same hamster wheel, in the same rotation, day after day after day.
There are people who just choose to LIMIT their tastes and choices. Oh, well....their loss. More for the rest of us, eh?
Living life on the edge - for me - just means being open to new sensations and experiences.
In part, it is what the poet Walt Whitman was talking about in his poem "The Road Less Traveled."
I don't repel down mountains or jump out of perfectly good airplanes. That doesn't mean I don't live life on the edge.
By contrast to my life, that of many people I've known is just "dull and safe."
To each their own, I guess.

It means to live in the moment with no ability to plan for the future or live responsibly. If you are maturing you do not "live life on the edge". That's a very big part of growing up.

It means living the life of a gambler, taking chances, tolerating risk. And, there is a temperament type that lives this way naturally, that is it is more an internal tendency than a conscious choice.

living on the edge is viable but carries an element of risk. This is often termed as 'hedging your bets'
