The front wheel of my 1988 Honda Accord on the passenger side axle makes a very loud sounding metal scratch noise when I drive slow and make turns. I was told that its not so important and that I dont need to replace right away (since because lack of money it was not top priority), but eventually I will have to replace. It has been almost a year since the noise began. Now I will have to replace both front tires because its balding and replace/fix my both my front axle and one of my upper ball joints in the front also. The whole cost will be worth about $500 to $700. What will the results be if I just keep on driving without fixing both axles and the upper ball joint on the driver side? How much longer can I drive my car with out fixing that particular problem? Just a couple of weeks ago I had to replace new batteries and new alternator, cost me about almost $400! I may even have transmission problems! Is it worth it to fix it all? How much will I get for it if I sold as is?

Yup, I too read your problem and immediately thought your CV joints.

Sometimes you hear a metal grinding noise, but at first you usually hear CLICKING noises when you turn.

When you ignore the CLICKING noises when you turn, then you start to hear the metal grinding on metal. HELLA DANGEROUS!

I agree with the other person that you should upgrade 10 years to a 1998 Honda Accord. You NEED a USED CAR upgrade, but please DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR HONDA.

You don't want to be jilly-jacked. You don't need a lemon in your delicate financial state.

Have a mechanic look at it and inspect the car you are interested in BEFORE you purchase it. Also, run a CARFAX report to make sure the vehicle has no "issues" such as rolled back odometer, flood vehicle, prior accidents, etc.

Go to the public library and review Consumer Reports.

If you can't even envision yourself buying a used car right now with credit from a credit union, then you should at least start YOUR RESEARCH for the used car you will be buying in 2007!.

An informed consumer usually gets what he/she wants at the price he/she deserves.

The honda accord 1988 and in fact all cars within that year have alot of problems with axels. I had a '88 ford laser with the same problem.

My advise would be NOT to fix it. Simply because if you repair that job there is bound for something else to go wrong eg. Battery, Altenator <--like you said). You will forever be fixing your car and end up paying more on repairs that the overall price of the car.

Concidering its an '88 and has done 150+km i would estimate it @ approx 1200-1300 AUD which is about 930-1010 USD

Drive it for as long as you can! use it until its dying days (without major repairs) I did it. And in that time i saved enough money for a better car.

No I think its time to let a dead dog lie. Its sounds like the repair bill will be a lot higher than its worth. I have been in the car business for a long time and if your transmission is making any sounds at all or it seems to be acting up it will cost 1200-1500 to fix. The car isnt worth much more even if you sell it on your own. Move on.

no bro. definitely not. 1988 Honda is not worth putting another penny in it. unless you have some kinda sentimental value towards it. I mean why don't you just put your money in for a down payment and buy yourself something a bit nicer and more dependable?... something newer.. something like a 1996 or newer.. with very cheap payments... payments of about $150 a month not bad. Look at it this way, you can start building your credit by purchasing a $5,000 dollar car.. very cheap and dependable with insurance and guarantee and everything... anyways hopefully my advise is good to you. have a good day and make a smart decision. :)

GET RID OF IT NOW!!!!! You can get a car financed now even with questionable credit.Whoever told you to keep on driving with the grinding noise on the passenger side you have described should be slapped!!!That is your CV joints and the noise you hear is metal grinding on metal,NOT GOOD.You could lose all control of your car if they decide to go and when they start grinding that means fix them soon.To keep driving that thing is only inviting disaster, not to sound like I am scolding you but it is dangerous to drive a vehicle like that!!!!Get rid of it.Hondas are very good cars but once stuff starts going like that they are very expensive to fix.Go finance a car.

id say sell it, if u dont fix the front end you will have to continue to replace the tires, I have had an experience with eagle talon, once the problems start they dont stop. although honda is a lot better than my mitsubishi/eagle was get out while you can. you should be able to get a few hundred bucks for it. it all depends on what you plan on replacing it with, but since you said u are strapped for cash you may not be able to afford anything nice, its a viscous circle

One day, your front end is going to fail and you're going to injure or kill yourself and others. It's time for the shredder.
