I got a new Yamaha acoustic for Xmas and want more than anything to learn now. Know any good websites to show finger placements and such?

Learn some basic, easy chords first. There are many songs you can play with just a few simple chords. Don't try to be too fancy at first. Just strum and get a feel for it. Try this sight to learn finger placement. http://www.morphis.com/guitar_lessons/lesson_4.asp

I hope this helps and I wish you many hours of enjoyment playing.

Now, it will be boring but I suggest that you should learn to play Chromatic scales. Chromatic meaning, playing every note without skipping a fret but in the same hand position, not moving the hand, buit playing from bottom E (big string) to A to D to G to B to E and then back down again. Go only as fast as to get a clean sounding note and in some sort of a beat or time. Get yourself a metronome or you can find free programs that do the same thing.
The biggest problem when starting to play and the reason most people quit after a short period is it is too hard on their fingers and too hard to get used to placing the fingers to get a real & good sound. Scales are boring but are the best thing to getting the fingers working.

Guitar and Piano are 2 fullyyt diverse beasts. The guitar has a great type of timbral versatility to it whilst in comparison with the piano. as an occasion, the 6th agonize on the low E string is the same pitch because of the fact the 1st agonize on the A string, yet they have rather diverse sounds because of the fact resonance gets in touch. it particularly is particularly a chilled tool to play even regardless of the indisputable fact that. in case you're leaning to play electric, get a Squier Strat. each guitar participant you already know is in all risk gonna inform you in any different case, because of the fact, it sounds undesirable or isn't the terrific guitar in the worldwide. on the same time because it is genuine, it is likewise decrease priced, and whilst in comparison with one Act guitars, it is not too undesirable. it particularly is below $250 for the %. with the amp and the tuner, cable, bag, and each thing else, and it is not a foul set. i'm nevertheless utilising the gig bag I have been given from it 5 years in an prolonged time my Iceman. The amp at last went because of the fact I used it outdoors in particularly humid circumstances and the electrics corroded over. yet for the quick term, that's a stable investment. once you first %. up an tool to income, you will desire to enhance your prepare skills, the two mechanics and generally working in direction of, so do no longer spend $4 hundred on a guitar precise away. that's a shame to make certain human beings spend $500+ on Epiphone Les Pauls and knock offs, the right thank you to play some songs, and then supply up and characteristic the guitar filled in a closet. in case you do get the set, there is generally a e book risk-free the place it teaches you some notes on each string, then some chords, grants some ordinary songs, with notes and chords. no longer something to deep into the thought yet use that during learning the mechanics, which'll at last assist you to in the thought. go during the e book, make certain you already comprehend it, then visit a instructor, who will coach you (ideally) progressed mechanics, then start up introducing concept. some human beings say to income a thank you to play tabs that are very powerful in case you opt directly to income a music or a sparkling technique yet persist with the popular notation because of the fact it will particularly assist you to. Guitar isn't inevitably complicated to income in case you're prepared to put in the time to coach, even regardless of the indisputable fact that it particularly is ridiculously worthwhile to play.

I can give you some links that really hooked me up when i was a beginner:
http://www.all-guitar-chords.com
http://www.guitartricks.com/
http://www.all-good-tabs.com
Btw dont forget to practice RIGHT.DO NOT practice wrong notes and tabs.thats called negative progress. And guitar is not about how many notes you play in a second, its about HOW you play each and every note.thats something that most of the guitarists should understand these days...in the first link you can select the chord or scales name and get the tabs+notes for it.

I bought a poster that had on it many different chords. I hung it on the wall and refer it to often when I'm at a loss for finger placement of a particular chord.

Make up your own chords.

Ignore everyone elses advice.

Nothing kills creativity more than wasting time trying to learn how other people play guitar.
