WOW! thanks for the speedy replies.
Saw someone mention 50,000 as a figure recently (on an unsigned band forum of all places) & wondered if there were any official estimates.

we can't know. bands must be forming and disbanding all the time.

the only way we find out is if we see them before they're signed once they get signed or hear them once they have... at that stage they can be counted but before that no one's keeping records.

i wish they would, 'cos that way we might be able to listen to them and tell they "you guys have a chance, you lot need to go home, you lot enjoy your time together, you guys are geniuses, you two, keep your day jobs... etc"

there must be people out there who could go really far with just a bit of encouragement which they dont' get right now...

How many GREAT unsigned bands are there in the uk? would be better question. That'll get the numbers down a bit.

Oh! and then...'who write their own GREAT material'. That'll bring the numbers down even more.

Having said that...when was GREAT ever a guarantee of a recording deal.

i understand a live performance promoter in California i will refer you to. relies upon on your kind of music although. A excursion will be severe priced, you need to imagine of shuttle costs, accomodation, nutrition that sort of element. there are a large number of venues that aid you play for loose, even although some may be unpaid. Do you've all of your man or woman kit and sound equipment? Or your man or woman sound engineer, it ought to fee extra to employ one for each venue. then you ought to think with regard to the promotional costs for the excursion to get human beings out for your shows. Infact some venues require a minimum finally end up so that you may play. most inexpensive mind-set to promoting of course is Myspace.

Ouch. Since there is no known accurate record, it would be hard to tell, but I'm guessing its in the tens of thousands.
