I'm a virgin and I don't see why I would need to go. I just have itching occasionally down there.

Yes you really need one. Why are you afraid? It doesn't hurt, it doesn't last long, and it's the best way to maintain your reproductive health.

The poster below, Gen, is talking complete nonsense! Do not worry about her answer.

It doesn't matter if you're a virgin or not, you need to go. It's not a big deal, when it's over you'll laugh over how much you worried for no reason. Please go, your mother is right.

Every woman should get one at least every 2 years. Because even when you can feel nothing peculiar, it doesn't mean that everything is alright. You could be very young and be a virgin and still have gyno problems. Plus it's a good occasion to ask the doctor about menstruation or contraception (never hurts to be informed by a specialist). If you are afraid of being examined you would probably feel more comfortable if the gynecologist is a woman.

If you are a virgin you can probably wait until you are 18 or until you become sexually active (or plan on it) . If you have any symptoms you should go for the exam. If there is itching but no discharge and the itching is not severe, you should be OK, but if your mom insists you go, there isn't much you can do except go!
However, you can ask her to take you to someone who specializes in younger patients or to a midwife. They are a lot less intimidating! Good luck!

If you are not sexually active, or have not been interfered with, it is not necessary to have a pap smear or gyno check up! If you or your mother are concerned about the itching a GP can let you know if it is of any concern! But at 14, no sex or interference, don't worry about it!

Noone can make you do anything you aren't ready for. If you're not sexually active i would say no you don't need one. Women are naturally self conscious at that age. I remember i wouldn't even let anyone see me naked. I haven't had a gyno yet and i'm 18. It's a scary experience and to me and my beliefs you're not longer pure because someone has seen and touched down there besides yourself.

WHILE they say start when your sexually active or when your 18 many people go before either. you wont be going for regular check ups but more so a few times so you get to know and trust your doctor, you can ask any questions and tell them anything. also there is this new shot to prevent cervical cancer and such and the recomend teens and young adults get it and thats where you would get it from. and dont worry they wont be very invasive at this age .

It is a normal thing to get an exam at your age. They need to do checkups like this to make sure your periods are normal and that you don't have anything abnormal happening in your reproductive organs. That is why they do pap smears. It is so they can check to make sure you don't have any sexually transmitted diseases, some of which can lead to things like cervical cancer. They need to make sure everything is functioning correctly.

You don't have to really start going until you're either sexually active or 18 yrs old, which ever comes first. I got my first one done when I was 17. If you've never had intercourse before it will be a little uncomfortable but it won't hurt. Ask your MOM to find you a Female Doc. That helps me be less nervous when I go.

Yes sweetie you do. Actually a female should get one every year from the time they are 13. You could have something going on that you don't have symptoms for yet or you don't know about.

Mom's are like this, maybe they like to torture us. My mom wanted to take me to a male doctor for one of those. I flatly refused said she'd have to drag me by the hair to do that and that if she managed to get me there I'd kick the doctor in his head.

She agreed to take me to a female doctor. Insist on a female doctor over a male doctor.

But you should have one of these once a year atleast. I'm 19 now, and i've been going to the same female doctor since i was your age.

Best to make sure everything is okay down there, it's part of womens health that we do this often as we have to stay healthy.
