First off, I have taken very few medicines that have actually helped with whatever ailment I have had. There have been a few though, such as strep throat, that the meds did do the job. The problem is, the antibiotics suppress the immune system. So therefor, you are only making yourself more susceptible to catching something else. To me, that is doing more harm than it should. Also, getting to the root of the problem to resolve it is far better than alleiviating the symptoms.
There are other alternatives to prescription drugs.
Certain natural remedies will do the same job if used the right way, used quickly(as you feel the problem coming on you) and for an extended amount of time. They are ususally not a quick fix, but if given the chance, will do the same job and sometimes better than pharmaceutical drugs.
Take the treatment for Shingles, I have had a few friends go to the Dr. only to find no relief at all.
Then, they turned to a special blend of natural ingredients, and found relif in one application!
Yes, I belieave in natural, alternative medicine. There are a great many ways to cure what ails without prescription drugs that can and ususally do lead to more serious complications.
Lets also remember that food can also be our enemy. To much starch, sugar, carbohaydrates and others, can lead to many health related problems. Taking vitamins and other supplements can help also, the foods we eat are not always enough to keep our bodies healthy. Our poor planet has taken a beating and the soil has been depleated of its natural nutirents to the point that, I believe we need to suppliment.
Eating right, drinking plenty of "chemical free" water, and excersing can also be a way for the body to repair and regain its strenghth to fight off diseases and other health problems.
I was diagnosed with Scoliosis this year, and will not have surgery if at all possible. I am seeing a Chiropractor who believes, at least for now, that it can be relieved(not cured) by adjustments. It has helped a lot, I can sleep now and walk better than I have in years. I have not needed anything for pain in quite some time. I am sure that many people would benefit from a more natural approach to health. Even the most skeptical person needs to give it a chance, I did, and I am glad that I did.
Thank you for your concern, and good luck with your new profession, many people just need to learn the better way of eating to give their bodies a fighting chance to stay healty!

You give too much credit to the masses. Most people don't research the benefits of natural healing. They have been taught to go to the doctor when you get sick. Unfortunately by that time its too late for natural cures or prevention. I've worked in a clinic where the patients come in at least once a month. The common attitude is fix me. They are completely clueless about why they are there. Even natural healers seek help for personal health problems. I agree that finding your own answers is the best way to stay healthy. I've distributed supplements for years. I've tried many brands. The most successful thing I've done is learn to do self diagnosis by using muscle testing. It's easier than I thought it would be. I can get answers for myself or anyone else. Its fast and accurate. I'm glad you found the secret to your health and wellness. Spread the hope.

Many conditions of the body can be improved or even healed with proper exercise, rest, diet and nutrition. Mild cases of type II diabetes are a good example. Kidney stones are often resolved without drugs. So can the common cold. Even the some cases of depression can be treated with supplements.
However, no amount of herbs, supplements, or teas will reset a broken leg, extract an abscessed tooth, calm an exploding appendix, or stop a potentially fatal anaphylactic allergic reaction. For physical misalignments such as herniated discs, diet will not work, nor will acupuncture. You must have surgery or chiropractic care.
In my line of work, there is a lot that preventative care and diet can do to improve your oral health. But when it comes down to rotting teeth, you HAVE to cut the teeth and fill them. There are no viable alternatives...yet.
Western and alternative medicine each have the strengths and weakness for various conditions. Do not dismiss proven, reliable tools because you are philosophically opposed to them. A wise person should *impartially* study the advantages and disadvantages of each before making an informed decision.

I do not believe in an all or nothing approach.
Each method has its strengths and weakness, and should be used together in order to optimize treatment. The physcian and alt. health practitioners should work together for the good of everyone.
Examples:
There are many acute illnesses that can not be cured alone via diet and supplements (strep, severe infection such as gangrene, HIV, etc.). Modern medicine is needed in order for the patient to survive, and nutrition and supplements takes on a supporting role.
E.g.: Strep infection. Need antibiotics. Antibiotics may kill off good gut bacteria. Patient also get 'script for probiotics, and insructions to eat as much yogurt as they can stand.
Believe me, I have seen these first hand! If you have gangrene or flesh eating staph. You do not want a poultice, chicken soup, or supplements!!! You want strong drugs, started yesterday! If they continue to spread, you want surgery!! You can not diet your way out of appendicitis See what I mean?
MANY diseases may be prevented in the first place, and even brought under control using proper diet and supplements (heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol) . Example- the oatmeal and cholesterol studies. The patient may need cholesterol lowering drugs to begin with, but with lifestyle (including diet) changes, may be able to safely wean themselves off the medication and control the condition with diet alone.
Hope this was helpful- dd
Hi all- looks like we got visited by a thumbs down troll! lol!
I enjoyed reading everyone's opinion, though. happy New Year to all! - dd

Well, you asked in Alternative Medicine, so I'd assume you're going to get no negative response here!
Allopathic medicine takes the approach of alleviating the symptoms, usually ignoring the root cause. Sometimes the cause is made worse by the treatment of symptoms, as in steroids to suppress immune response like asthma.
Alternative medicine or Naturopathic approach is to look at the symptom to find a root cause. For instance, an overactive immune response like asthma or arthritic inflammation might mean the immune system needs help.
I first became interested in nutrition when I alleviated my severe depression by taking a vitamin B complex. The depression was brought on by birth control pills containing estrogen which over time causes vitamin B deficiency. My doctor didn't know this. A friend did. She saved my life by recommending vitamin supplementation.

I definitely believe in alternative medicine. I have tried traditional medicine and it failed me all the way. Made me more sick. I switched to alternative medicine as a last resort and I must admit I am a new person. I feel great! It's so unfortunate that first people try traditional medicine and then alternative. Good Nutrition and Natural remedies make a huge difference!

Do you mean to take the statistics of people that believe in healing the body with food and supplements ?Is it a question of inquiry to assess your future career and estimate the no of people that visit you ?
I guess as a dietician you need to work with major hospitals to counsel on dieting to the discharged patients, and as well to assess the nutrition and other qualities to various patients within the hospital. your role is something like dessertation to a patient in a hospital counseling him during discharge.
When you become major i guess you shall have ample scope for individual conultancy for organisations and individuals.
As far as your question is concerned, No body i guess believe absolutely in only healing through food and supplements. It is because the recent studies of ecologysts say that the people who are close to the natural environmental and ecological conditions and atmosphere are healthy and free from deseases. Even morals are merged in their thoughts like the environment and land belongs to them and they have all the responsibility to save it in all aspects. They have some attachment with ecology.
This is about some statistical data in corners of world where there is no pollution, environmental degradation etc.
so the thought of healing absolutely with food and supplements is quite an immature thought in the present circumstances of concrete jungles and polluted ecological impacts and global warmed areas. One need scientific methods to get cured from various ailments.
Drugs are essential but the morales of the doctors is more essential than the drugs.
surgery is inevitable for surgical cases and even accident cases.
A nutritian can only be a para medical staff nowadays.
ofcourse a creativity in suggesting food ,integrating the ecological balance, geographical study, and traditional or conventional methods will always be recognised in future. Alcohol and cigarretes for examples which is not a habit for many countries is introduced by western countries which are eating the human now. The commercial productions of pizzas and burgers are all spoiling the health and causing obesity. Natural food means just not only natural but natural to that geography is too a worth considering point. Globalisation though importing many thngs including food might not be good in food import if it dont suit geographically.
The question is

There is nothing wrong with studying nutrition and using the spell check. The knowledge you gain will help you understand the fundamentals of herbs, food, nutrients and the language that the AMA uses to confuse us. Keep an open mind with both areas. Learn them both and you will be a valuable asset. Blow the dust off your dictionary too.

Actually any health care worker can tell you that proper nutrition is an instrumental component in the healing process. The diet is a great part of our overall health. If a person eats Little Debbie's for every meal they will not only feel worse than a person who eats properly, but their overall health will be worse. Taking prescription drugs does have it's place but should not be used as a crutch for someone who could have avoided a potential health problem by exercising a little discretion with their dietary habits.
