Terry is ten years older than this brother Tomas. Twenty years ago, Terry was twice as old as Tomas. How old is Terry now?

This is what I guessed up:

x-20=2(x+10)

The answer comes out to -40 which I know is not right.

Let

x = Terry's age now
y = Thomas's age now

Then we have:

x = y + 10
x - 20 = 2(y - 20)

Simplifying the second equation

x - 20 = 2(y - 20)
x - 20 = 2y - 40
x = 2y - 20

Now we have

x = y + 10
x = 2y - 20

Subtracting the first from the second

0 = y - 30
y = 30

x = y + 10
x = 30 + 10 = 40 is Terry's age now

Let x be Tomas' current age. Then x+10 will be Terry's current age.

(x+10)-20 = 2(x-20)

whicih gives,

x = 30

x+10 = 40 (Terry's current age)

actually you are not far off on your equation rewrite it like this:
2x - 20 = x + 10 subtract x from both sides

x - 20 = 10 add 20 to both sides

x = 30

a million. (2)(8x-5) 2. (2)(5y-10) 3. 12x-30 right here they're, the 1st 2 are purely doubling, so which you're taking a the extensive form (or this project the equation) and multiply by 2. third you're taking the salary, and multiply it by the form of hours you artwork. and then take that result and subtract 30. desire I helped.

x=terry
y=thomas
x-y=10
x=y+10
x-20=(y-20)*2
y+10-20=2y-40
10-20+40=2y-y
30=y
x-y=10
x-30=10
x=40
Terry is 40 & thomas is 30
