FOr christmas i bought my gf a promise ring, but to me a promise ring means to promise to love and cherish not necessiarly marriage although i would love to marry her... i just want to know what it means by me giving it to her.

As far as I know its a promise that you want to marry her someday. However I agree that it can mean what ever you want it too. You should tell her when you give it to her what it means to you (what its a symbol of) I'm sure she will love it!

A girl usually thinks that a promise ring is a promise to get married one day. Your not engaged but you do want to marry her. It can mean anything, just make sure your girl understands what you want it to mean, or your friends are going to think your engaged.
