I'm not sure you can compare these trilogies for enjoyment. Each trilogy has it's own uniqueness to it and each has it's own fan base who will take sides on which trilogy is the most enjoyable to watch.
The reason I feel that The Back to the Future trilogy fairs best as the most enjoyable trilogy is that it is familiar to people insofar as that it occurs on Earth. Zemeckis and Gale (aka: The Two Bobs) stay the course in visualizing the various time periods visited by Marty and Doc on screen as both believable and true to the history of those times. Star Wars takes place "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" and is only assumed history, not real history. The Lord of the Rings is pure fantasy and while it takes place in Earth's past, it is a fictional past with creatures and human-like beings that have never existed.
The Back to the Future trilogy is more identifiable to people of all ages because some have lived in the time periods (1955 and 1985), others wish to live in them (2015 - aka: "The Future") and are close now to doing so, and some wish to relive past times through history books, reinactments, historical museums, and other facets of history (1885). We can relate to these time periods immediately upon viewing the trilogy, and we can imagine how we would react if we were allowed to visit them, just as Marty and Doc had, because of our familiarity with them.
So while all of these trilogies (BTTF, SW, & LOTR) are enjoyable to watch, my feeling is that the Back to the Future trilogy stands out as the most enjoyable to watch simply because you can imagine yourself in these time periods and places more easily than the other two.

it was certainly underrated when those films were first released. nowadays, the back to the future trilogy is regarded by many sci-fi and film fans as one of the best movie franchises ever. it was great fun to watch michael j fox, christopher lloyd and lea thompson as marty mcfly, doc brown and lorraine mcfly- marty's mother. missed the first one today on tv, but seeing as i have it on dvd already, i wasn't missing out at all. tomorrow itv1 are showing the second, and the third on friday. and the delorean by the way, is one of the most memorable and famous cars in movie history alongside the batmobile, james bond's aston martin, the ferrari in ferris bueller's day off, and the white cadilac ambulance in ghostbusters to name.

Personally, I don't think they were as good a trilogy as either Star Wars (the first as you metioned of course, the second set was rubbish) or LOTR, but having said that; beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so what ever makes you laugh! :) Cheers

My favourites when I was a kid! I was in love with Michael J. Fox...
I alternated: Back to the Future, Indiana Jones & Beetlejuice... Then Back to the Future, etc.
Now, I've grown up... It's: American Beauty, Fight Club, some other movie. Then American Beauty again, etc.

BTTF was definitely a fun movie - but I think 2 & 3 stretched the concept a bit too far. No way as good as Star Wars or LOTR though.
