You can but it depends what ambiance you want. Most bathrooms and kitchens are painted with semi gloss on the ceilings. I've used both eggshell and semi gloss when I've done faux finishes on ceilings. Just know that when you turn on light fixtures or lamps the ceiling will "shine" a little differently with the light than flat paint does.

semi-gloss will show ALL the defects in your ceiling- Flat paint should always be used on ceilings, but I have seen eggshell that looked great after the ceiling was redone 3 x's to get it perfect. The best way to use a gloss finish on ceilings is to incorporate it with a texture procedure.

The problem with a semi gloss paint on a ceiling is that the more gloss that a paint has the more impurities stand out. Almost every ceiling has rafter marks where the wall board was screwed to the rafters. A flat paint will help hide these.

Only if you have an absolutely flat and perfect ceiling, and you like this low-luster gloss.

On painted ceilings, and walls with such a large surface area, most use a flat paint (some use eggshell), so as to not draw attention to the imperfections of the surface.
Often, higher luster paints on ceilings are reserved only for areas that take a battering (kitchen/bathrooms) -- but are isolated from a grand view, as is a living room.
A shiny or semi-shiny ceiling trumpets imperfections.

Unless you need a finish that bright, I would opt for flat or satin sheen as this hides the possible inperfections in the ceiling. There is a ceiling paint that goes on purple and dries white. Depends on your situation.

Personally, I like the semi-gloss but I don't think most people do. To each his own.

I wouldn't. Flat is the word. I did mine years ago and it looked like dookie.
