My doctor suggested a cool mist humidifier, as long as you keep it clean and rotate the filter, it's fine.
And since I've been using it, my daughter hasn't coughed at all, it's been really nice. Before I got it, no matter what I did, she would wake herself up coughing a couple of times a night.

My nephews doctor said that a cool mist humidifier is the best one that you can use because if you use a warm mist humidifier there is a slight chance that with the warm water it is possible it will burn the baby if it is too close to the crib

I have used a cool mist one for my son since birth and it works very well. He had a bout of Croup 2 years ago and had such a hard time breathing and when I ran the cool humidifier he was able to sleep easier!

We asked our pediatrician this and he said that either are fine. He said the only draw back with a warm mist is they might cause burns. Being as our daughter is only 2 months old that's not a problem for us since she is not crawling. He just said to make sure to clean it out everyday and we should be fine.

Germs, virus, mold, and bacteria thrive in a warm, moist environment. So, it is my preference to use a cool moist humidifier for myself as well as my children. In between uses, I wash it out with white vinegar water and let it air dry, in the sun whenever possible.

Cool mist are safe in that they do not cause burns.
Warm mist inhibit mold and bacterial growth.
A pan of water beside the heating vent, cheap, easy to clean and safe until the baby starts crawling!
I, personally, use a warm one. Though I am not convinced one is any better than the others.
