I know what mitosis is and I understand it's important, but I can't really explain why it is. Any help?

somatic cells grow old and subsequently die. If they didn't divide through the process known to us as mitosis (so as to stem daughter cells), our human bodies would run out of living cells and would die along.

In really simple terms, Mitosis is important because it allows for division of the parent genome into two identical copies in each of the daughter genomes.

In animals and plants, mitosis ensures that tissue can grow. One cell becomes 2, 2 becomes 4... that's how a baby carrot becomes a big carrot

In bacteria (e.g. in yogurt), mitosis is important because it helps increase the number of bacteria...(2, then 4, then 8...). After each mitotic cycle, the number of cells double...so you can see it is a very rapid increase in the number of cells.

Growth of the body of the organism and also repair of body parts are both good reasons for mitosis. By the way the skin is in a constant state of mitosis as our skins are renewed in about a week. A shallow cut in the skin will heal in about a week, the time it takes for the skin to be replaced in general. Some areas undergo more rapid mitosis like the growth of blood cells (about 2.5 million per SECOND). WOW talk about rapid division. Actually there are a lot of cells constantly making new RBC in the bone marrow.

Mitosis is necessary for cells to pass on genetic information to new cells. The process of mitosis ensures that the daughter cells will have the 'same' genetic information as the parent cells.

mitosis is needed to get rid of old cells. Also bigger cells need to be divided into smaller ones because the bigger something is the longer it is going to take to diffuse nutrients to the entire cell.
