I would not like to be confined with other people in a place where I had no control. It would not help my mental state at all. However these places are definitely needed and people get well in there. Fortunately we have drug and alcohol rehab clinics, councillors, priests and each other to talk to and relieve the burden of our mistakes, resentments, and fears. We also have prescribed medication. If I did not have anti-depressants I would certainly find living a normal life a struggle. I used to abuse alcohol too so am fortunate that I can use the fellowship of a 12 step organisation to help me.

how is being in a mental institute funny? not everyone who is in one is "crazy" and they are nothing like what tv or movies make them. some people are put in there for drug rehab others are there because of break downs. alot of people put themselves in there for sucicidal thoughts. but everyone in there needs help if even for a little while. no way being in one or "surviving" one is a "lol" situation.

I think you would come out in a worse state than when you went in. You would survive, but it would not be a pleasant existence.

I was seriously institutionalized once (for about a month and a half) and hospitalized once after that (2 weeks) about 4 years later. Its rough but its definitely doable.

I get panic attacks, Like real bad ones, I asked to be in one and they said i was just getting "panic attacks and that is nothing" and that is not a cause to be "certified insane". LOL i wanted to be in one and they didn't want me! hilarious! well at least that made me think i wasn't as bad as i thought.

I would probably feel more at home and a lot safer than when I'm out on the street.
