With a driving licence and car registered in Pakistan, I would like to travel by road through various countries including China, Iran, Turkey and the Middle East. What exactly are the requirements and possibilities?

You should check the local governmental offices to see what their laws are.

BUT . . .

There is no such thing as an "International Driver's License", that's a scam.

There is however, an "International Driver's Permit" which is basically just a translation of a valid, state-issued driver's license. IDPs were created to help law enforcement interpret the driver's license of a foreign visitor. In the USA, they can ONLY be issued by the AAA or the AATA and they cost $10.00

The UN treaty that created the IDPs has been ratified by about 200 countries and currently does not include China. Iran, Turkey, and Pakistan are signatories to the treaty.

Please note, the IDP does NOT give you a new license, it is only a translation of your valid license and MUST be issued by the same country that issued your DL.

Good Luck

if you are in the USA, try contacting the AAA or a state motor vehicles office. if you are not in the USA, try contacting your embassy or the embassies of the countries in which you wish to drive. there is something called an international drivers license that will probably satisfy your needs.

Search Yahoo for International Drivers License. You'll find a lot of websites like this one:
