The latest thinking about Iran is they are losing market share of oil production every year because of their inability to maintain their own oil production levels. This problem has been exacerbated because of poor repair and maintenance and lack of new technology to improve oil production.
Iran's economy is being severely strained by it's own inefficiencies. It is expected that Iran's economy, in just a short time, will collapse due to mis-management, and it's practice of supplying insurgents throughout the middle east and Africa, with money, arms, and recruits to maintain their jihad.
To do anything now, that would unite the Iranians may not be productive! Iran, politically is fragmented, perhaps it's the time to let that play out. Ahmadinejad is not very popular amongst his own people, and his political allies are losing ground faster than he. The are not returning to office after losing local elections.
Many Iranians see little advantage with Iran's aggressiveness regarding the US, Israel, a nuclear program beyond energy. They will eventually take back their country and neuter those who abuse power, people like Ahmadinejad. In the meantime, we might see a gradual improvement in working with Iran. There certainly are signs that would indicate that this is happening.

Yes, its been on the cards for years. They just didnt expect Iraq to be so difficult. There is oil in Azerbaijan that the US wants to bring out through countries it controls. It aint going to control Russia or China so Iraq/Iran is the fastest route to the west 'cos Turkey is is next and its on our side right? Who the heck knows ... really?

the Iraq war was based on Iraq's failure to comply with U.N. resolutions? since when are neocons running around championing the work of the U.N.? what planet do you live on? The Iraq war was based on the Republican organized crime syndicate's plan to make money. There's no money to be made by declaring war on Iran, therefore, no deal.

Probably not.
And be careful - the Bush bashers on here are going to jump all over you for stating the real reason we invaded Iraq....
Don't you know that we went in for oil...and to pay back daddy's debt...and so Haliburton could make money.(sarcasm, by the way) Some people should get a life.
Point proven: See Niko above.

There was lots of good reasons for the Iraq War.
Iran cannot be trusted with nuclear weapons. Either the US will attack, or Israel will. Inevitable. No alternative.
Sometimes war is the answer.
