That's a good question, but I think it's the people you're getting. I was raised in the south, now live in the Midwest, but we always tip a minimum of 20%, and if the service is excellent, our waiter or waitress can expect 25% to 30%. Anyone who has ever had to work as a waiter or waitress tends to be a better tipper, if they receive quality service.

People pay less in the south because in overall the cost of living in the south is considered to be cheaper than the north, hence the cheaper tip. I live in the north but was raised with the knowledge that most waitresses are single parents or college students with waitressing being their only income, so I have always tipped 15 to 20% depending on service provided. Wether I am in the north or south had no bearing on it.

I don't think that is necessarily true of all southerners. I tip 20 % and I live in the South. I think a crappy tipper is a crappy tipper nationwide! I will tell you I worked at a Coffee house ( the big one ) and the tips in those stores is awful! Drive through stores (who do more business) get even worse tips. Sad...its hard work.

I live in North Carolina. And while I always tip more than twenty percent, I know that a lot of people work for close to minimum wage. This makes it hard to want to spend more money due to our economy. It really depends more on the type of people than where they are located. You can also break it down to ethnic groups. I used to live for my tips for several years. Ethnic differences also play a role.

I think it depends on the individual not the region you live in.
Some people are cheapskates and tip crappy (5-10%) and others who have been waitresses and waiters or know how hard they work will tip 20%+
I dont know why.....it is what it is.

Maybe people in the South view servers and bartenders as being "beneath" them.
Possibly a vestige of institutional racism left over from when menial jobs were held by minorities.

Im a big tipper because Im a big spender. Most people in the North are big spenders in my opinion. You know, people from Philly, New York, D.C., Baltimore. They liek to spend money and sometimes they have a lot more of it! LOL! Its true!
