i have a dell laptop, inspiron 8100 .512 ram 866 mhz intel 3, firewire windows xp. I have $400 to buy something else, could i get something better ? maybe something used? or should i keep the dell?

Unless you are into gaming or really heavy graphics, in which case you couldn't do much better for $400 anyway .... here is what I would recommend....

Keep saving your money until you have twice that ... even if it takes a year ... and then get a new laptop. At this point, what you could get that is better, wont be that much better, but with twice that amount, esp. 6-12 months down the road, you will be able to make a real upgrade.

The only reason I would suggest you try to upgrade right now for what money you have would be if there are things you need to do but cant on your computer.

There are things you can do now (using software) to optimize your system.

In this day and age, an 866 MHz is a very slow processor (I remember when it would have been the best thing since sliced bread, though!).

Keep it as a backup though.

try newegg ... for 500 u could get somthing alittle better ...
