When the Vietnam War ended in defeat for the U.S. Ford said"Today, America can regain the sense of pride that existed before Vietnam. But it cannot be achieved by refighting a war that is finished as far as America is concerned." Evoking Abraham Lincoln, he said it was time to "look forward to an agenda for the future, to unify, to bind up the nation's wounds." What do you think Bush would say about the parallel situation in the middle east, Do you think he will ever step down and admit the same as the former 2 great historical men..

No he won't for two reasons.

One, Bush is just too damn stubborn to admit he was wrong about Iraq (remember those weapons of mass destruction?)

Second, Ford could afford to exit Vietnam because it wasn't his war. Ford inherited Vietnam from Nixon who inherited it from Johnson.

Ford didn't have any personal stake in Vietnam the way Lyndon Johnson did. To him, it was just a war that had dragged on too long and it was time to finally close it out and negotiate a peace treaty with the North Vietnamese.

Iraq is Bush's War, the way Vietnam was Johnson's War. He's backed himself into a corner the way Johnson did.

I think that's what will happen to Iraq. Two Presidents from now, we'll finally get our troops out.

Well, for starters, Bush will not step down until his term is up.

The difference is VietNam was much more protracted and a true 'war' and there is a different face to our enemy than there was in 'Nam. It's hard to draw a true comparison and the fight is not over yet.

No he won't. Ford had the advantage of not having gotten into the war, so he could get out more gracefully. Bush is stuck in the mess that he started and is trying to figure out how to get out and still save his dignity.

Lincoln was a criminal and not a great historical man!
Since we are winning the war in Iraq it wouldn't make any sense
to make some speech about defeat.
I understand how much Liberals want us to lose this war, but that doesn't mean it will happen.

No, bush doesn't have the honor or integrity available for him to admit a mistake.

Quite honestly I think he's so blinded by his war lust and need to win at all costs that he doesn't even see the parallels.
