The only difference between them is that a racist can tell who to hate just by looking at someone whereas homophobes have to take a guess as to whether you're gay or not. Slim difference if you ask me.

Homophobia is an irrational fear of homosexuality or of the expression of homosexuality and can manifest itself in much the same way as racism, but the two are not necessarily mutually inclusive. In some people, men especially, homophobia is often times a fear that they themselves are gay and in an effort to suppress their desires for other men, they vent it through hostility.
Racism on the other hand is the overt display of unbridled hatred for any race not your own. Black people can be racist. White people can be racist. Chinese people can be racist. And so forth. One can be a racist and not a homophobe and vice versa, but generally once a person begins to hate, they do not limit themselves to any one group that are different from themselves.

Hate comes in many different forms - homophobes and racists are just a couple of examples.

It is ignorance that causes both prejudices. They cannot be compared, at least for me, due to the fact that the colour of skin cannot be hidden.
As for the other answer given. Sexuality is not a choice either, but thats another discussion. It is only the choice on if the person acts upon it.

Homophobe is just someone who knows that being gay is an abomination. A racist is totally different than homophobe. A racist doesn't like u for the color of ur skin.
Gay people go against their own conscience, society, nature and God himself. That's not cool.

No one chooses their race OR their sexuality. Yes, being a homophobe is escentially as hateful as being a racist. Both are hate unrelated to any logical reasoning.
Just look at the arguments being used against Gay Marriage, they're the same ones used over fifty years ago against inter-racial marriage!

Yes, that's exactly how I see them. That's how I described the way my mother was acting. She is always bashing gays. I told her she is no different than a racist.

I agree...hate is hate! it doesn't matter if it's directed at someones sexual orientation, race, religion or culture. ignorance and fear (and lack of education and bad parenting) usually turn to bigotry. why can't these people educate themselves and get to know people who are "different" rather than just automatically hate us? hatred is a learned behavior, and I believe parents who teach their children to hate are guilty of child abuse! You are socially retarding your child! and sometimes that blind, ignorant hatred turns to violence!
