It is absolutely legal. Read the EULA though. If you download illegal stuff with it, then it becomes illegal. If you download music, you must delete it after you listen to it, etc. Not all people use Limewire to steal pirated software and music.

Limewire is free. It is also legal to own. Is it legal to use? That depends. For the sake of argument, let's talk about music (although the rules apply to music, movies, software, etc).

If you own a CD, you're allowed to make copies of that CD so that you don't destroy the original. If you own a CD, you can download the music that's on that CD legally. If you don't own a CD, you can't download that music for free legally. You can use iTunes or Napster or something that has a license for song downloads (you pay $0.99 per song or whatever).

So if you don't own the music already, don't download it using Limewire. That is illegal.

It's free but it's not legal. It is a misconception that there is no risk. You can be sued if you get caught redistributing any copyrighted material. And since it is a file sharing program, others will be able to download music from your computer.. (thats where the illegal part comes in).
I hope this help you. You might want to check out Kim Komando's site . She has a great article on this subject that may help clear up a few things.

Its legal in the sense that person-to-person (comp to computer) sharing is legal like winamp and limewire... But it is illegal in the fact that the songs have not been released to that company for distribution. If you really want music and movies I would recommened downloading utorrent or bitlord and going to torrentreactor.net to get everything you want for several reasons, its faster downloading, theres more to choose from and the files title IS what the file is! its safer in a virus sense (torrent sites almost always scan files before posting them for you) and it uses up less of your computers resources!

And its free. Use it all while you can!

Free? Yes. Legal? Depends. Technically, there's nothing wrong with peer to peer file sharing, however, if you don't know the person giving you a piece of copyrighted material, then you are pirating that material, which is illegal.

Free? Yes.
Legal? No.

Most free file-sharing programs like that are illegal, but it's not like the RIAA knows where you live and will send you to prison for the rest of your life for it. I've been using Limewire for over 2 years, and nothing's happened to me.

It is illegal as you are breaking copyright laws, but they'll never arrest or fine you for it, unless you start up another Napster.
