They have only starting using this phrase very recently. It is a mix-up of two much older phrases meaning putting a huge effort into something: (1) busting a gut, meaning to get a tear in an abdominal muscle, which is also called a rupture; and (2) ball-busting, a coarser version of the same thing, although no such injury is actually caused by over-exertion, it just sometimes feels like it.

The orgasmic meaning of bust a nut is new. Bust a nut used to mean work hard and may have related to getting a hernia or to literally busting a nut (as in the thing that screws onto a bolt) because you torque it too hard.

Yeah because if you lift anything too heavy (because you are working too hard) you will rupture yourself down there.
Hence the term busting a nut in relationship to working harder than normal to get a job done. Like in:

We really need to Bust a Nut and get this job done as quickly as possible.
