No -- at a week a hpt should pick up a positive, but not necessarily. If you call a doctor, they will tell you to wait until two weeks past the date your period was due.
Keep in mind that you could have miscalculated your cycle, though, so if you feel pregnant but the test says negative, wait a week and test again.

You should know whether or not you are pregnant by the time you are two weeks past ovulation. If you have consistent periods, and know for sure that you are a week late, then you should have ovulated about three weeks ago and a hpt would tell you by now. However, it could be that this cycle happens to be a wacky one and you didn't ovulate yet or ovulated later than you think. Unless you track your ovulation, you just never know for sure!!!
If you're stressing, wait a few days between hpts until you're period or positive comes. It would also help to call your doc to see if they can do a blood test for you, or an ultrasound to let you know what's going on!

I new I was pregnant a week before my period was due. I took a First Response Pregnancy Test. Little line showed up right away - 10 days past ovulation.

After a missed period for a week it would more than likely be detected by a home pregnancy test by now.

You buy an early prediction pregnancy test. Or you can just wait it out and see what happens.
