You may be tempted to take them to big celebrations but what you will probably end up getting is being around a lot of drunks. Also, don't plan on going more than a few miles because there is a good chance that they won't even make it to Midnight and you don't really want to deal with the drunks on the road.
I would look into community celebrations. These are usually family friendly and less crowded than the big areas. They are generally run by the actual city or town and called things like "First Night" or "Family Festival".
I'm not in the Northeast but in my area there are 3-4 of these celebrations going on so they should not be hard to find.

What did you have in mind? Is this a "big" trip? Are you willing to put out money for the trip? If so, then go to upstate New York. There are many great skiing places in and around upstate N.Y.
You could go to Niagra Falls Canada! That would be fun!
Boston has a "First Night" This is a family celebration- no alcohol and many of the venues include musical acts, dance, etc. The tickets are reasonable and one gets into all the venues. The food is fairly decent, too.

A lot of cities have something called a First Night party/gathering. It's a New Year's Eve party and it's generally entertaining, free and dry, so it's more than suitable for children.
Check with the urban areas around you. You probably won't have to go far.

My family and I started when my daughter was 10 going to Orlando they have an area called Downtown Disney it is a lot of fun and they do the countdown at midnight. There is no fee to get in. Have a great dinner at the rain forest cafe, go to giradellis for desert and wait for the count down.

My advise, take them out for a nice dinner, then watch the ball drop from home in front of the tv. At such an early age, they'll never last until midnight anyway. Happy New Year!

You could always go to New York or Washington DC. I have been to both places during New Years and both of them are very fun to go to. Even with a little child

My church holds a family night every new years with food, soda, punch, games and songs. It's a fun safe way to celebrate with the entire family. Ask your church if they do the same thing and if they don't, maybe you could suggest it!

Wow--if you are that close, I would vote for New York City ! What a memory that would be.
I have never been there, but always wanted to go. I will make it there someday!
