My downstairs toliet runs randomly. You will hear that noise like after it flushes. It doesnt actually flush, but when I hear that noise I go into the bathroom and I see that there are little trickles of water doing down the bowl. It has been doing this for about 2 months, there isnt any other problems with it flushing or anything though. This is a 2 year old townhome I bought new. The upstairs one does not do this.

Anyone know what is wrong - if anything? Thanks!

There is a "flap" or similar object in the tank above the toilet bowl. The purpose of this is to stop water from flowing into the bowl. The water builds up at around one gallon. When you flush the toilet, you are lifting that flap so the stored water can rush into the bowl to "flush" it.

That flap is probably not seating into the place that it normally goes. That is a common problem. You may be loosing a lot of water, so don't put this off any longer.

Remove the top from the tank and look inside. You will see the water intake and valve assembly on your left. You will also see the lever that you use to flush. That lever is conncect by a rod or a chain to the flap.

The flap is pretty much in the center of the tank. You might also see a large metal or plastic elongated ball that is supposed to float at the top of the water. That float can be a little weak so don't damage it.

You might see that the flap has simply come unhooked or is stuck on something. If so, try just putting a little downward pressure on it to seat it into it's proper place. Getting stuck is common enough that I would try that before replacing anything.

Often that is all it takes. If you have to replace the flap, it is a relatively simple task. Any hardware store, etc. should have a replacement. The replacement does not need to be of the same style if you are handy enough to adapt the new style to the tank.

These are almost always a universal replacement. You will have to have the water off when you do this. See if there is a small valve in the water line, probably at the wall, under the tank. If not, you will have to turn off the main water line and that can be a little tricky in an old house.

adding to the above post, you can also run your finger around the bottom edge of the flange to remove any particles that might be keeping it from sealing the hole. Your fingers will turn black cause the rubber is leaching color and little bits of rubber. just wash your hands.
