Why do you think I go in the woods

They are if you close the lid before you flush. Leaving the lid open means that a fine cloud of spray is projected 4-6 feet in the air upon flushing. This spray hangs in the air for about 20 min and eventually settles on everything in its reach. The tank of a toilet is actually much dirtier than the seat.
Now--where's your toothbrush?
Clean the tank, seat and outside regularly with a bleach solution or half vinegar, half water. Make sure the cloths or sponges you use, are reserved for this purpose ONLY, and wash in bleach solution.

As long as you keep them clean and follow basic hygiene rules. Tiles floors are probably more hygienic than carpet. But even so I would much rather have a nice warm indoor loo at this time of year!!
