If you not just referring to clothing, sewing a simple-style lap quilt (even a quilt for a doll) or just making a pillow cover can be fun.

The simplest pattern I can think of is just to sew strips iof different fabrics together (along their long edges)... the strips don't even have to be even or parallel strips, which works well for beginners anyway. These can be made as "scrap" patterns (where just any colors or patterns and even fabrics are used), or in some sort of order (the simplest would be two alternating fabrics).

Instead of a lap quilt or pillow cover, the finished sewn-together strips could also be cut to shape, then used in other ways, usually turning under the edges first.... like sewing onto a sweatshirt or onto pants as pockets or onto a chef's/work apron (which is another easy thing to make, or could buy one at Michaels), etc.

I'd check JoAnn fabrics, they have patterns there, and people who could help you. Also check in Target's Craft section, or in the toy section.
