I am tired of questions like this. If 9/11 had not happened, I am quite sure Bush wouldn't have invaded Iraq. Bush freaked out because of reports of Saddam and his weapons of mass destruction. If they aren't there...ok. Saddam was still a murderous bastard that needed to go. It may not have been our war to fight, but I do think some good came from it.
I think the US has learned something - unfortunately, I am afraid our next leaders are going to use this war as an excuse to sit around and do nothing while the crazy bastards in the Mid East and N Korea build up their WMD's and plan more attacks on the us.
At least Bush has a set of balls!

Profiting? To listen to the press and the rest of the left the war is bankrupting us. Walter Cronkite portrayed the Tet offessive as a major loss for us while in fact we repulsed every attack and dealt the Viet Cong heavy losses. Back then with only the three networks the people had excuse for being duped into believing that and what followed was Washington losing the war that our troops were winning.
So here we are again doing the same thing. Our troops are winning every battle and every mistake is one of weakness and appeasment and lessened effort because of political correctness. As one example Sadr should have been dispensed with. He is a convicted murdered afterall and not from any US action. Most of Iraq is pretty peaceful. You don't heare of anything outside of Bagdad anymore. Well do you? There is no excuse this time with the internet and embedded reporters 24/7. And all we hear is twisted whines.
Too many have no concept of history and an attention span suited to sitcoms. We took about 11 years to get our independence and constitution. Our civil war was about 5 years. WW1 and WW2 were about 6 years each. 90,000 were killed in about 6 weeks at the Battle of the Bulge. Just our side. In historical terms our efforts in this war are as good as a Hollywood movie.
When will Americans learn? When we are attacked again. Here on our soil and people are reminded that these Islamic extremists want to rule over us or kill us. When we remember - or figure out - that when we divide we are our own enemy but that we have a common enemy. The mistake is forgetting who that enemy is.

What makes you think we're profiting?
Why do you care what the world thinks? What if the world is wrong?
Another Vietnam? You mean a noble cause, badly fought, not fought fiercely enough, wholly undermined by the shammeful American public losing their nerve, America humiliated for no good reason, and MILLIONS of peasants murdered by the victorious bad guys after the US left? You mean that Vietnam?
Being deemed naive is not the same as being naive.
Do you have as better plan for ending terrorism? Or are you just complaining?

What I find sad is that Osama got exactly - if not more - than he bargained for. Yes - after 9/11 we all banded together. But Maybe he was looking LONG TERM. Look at us now - we basically have a lame duck President and nothing will be accomplished. OUR SOLDIERS are in the Middle East fighting for Democracy - which is what America was founded on. Let's at least support those who are trying to uphold that right for others. Our Troops deserve our support regardless of what the Politicians are doing.

Well I'm not sure of the "real" reason for invading Iraq so I'm not sure if there's anything to learn, I noticed that the general public tends to have a short memory unfortunetly so I don't think people will learn as much as they should.

The politicians learned that the American public is still just as gullible as ever and that they can be hoodwinked into arguing party politics and chasing petty scandals while they rob us blind some more. As for the people, judging by the comments I see here, they haven't learned a thing. They are still going to play stupid party games just like the politicians want and we are all going to get robbed while we aren't looking.
It's kind of like the white glove the stage magician wears to keep your attention while his other hand is busy doing things you don't see.

Will future politicians learn from this mess? I think so. If they don't there is no hope for us.
Will the american people? I hope that we learn not to accept everything at face value.
Will Bush? absolutely not.
