I run three anti-spy-ware programs on my PC's. There is no problem with having three and I have run multiple programs at the same time before and it doesn't hurt you OS or PC. Anti-spy-ware programs like Spybot and such don't remain resident in the OS like Anti-Virus programs do. I typically don't run multiple anti-spy-ware programs at one time, because its a waste of system resources. I run the programs in traunches to make sure if one program misses mal or spy-ware that may be able to pick it up.

Now my Anti-virus software looks for spy, malware and the such.

Antivirus programs that run all the time, or offer "active protection," will cause crashes and errors as each program attempts to scan the same parts of the computer, or registers the other as a threat.

Most antispyware programs, however, only activate and scan once you run them yourself, so you can run one, close it, and run the other. In fact, it is usually recommended to have more than one antispyware program, as usually a single program does not get everything itself.

That's the problem with some of the anti-virus and anti-spy programs. If you have two of them going, one thinks the other is an intruder and tries to get rid of it, which does result in computer crashes. You're better off to pick one and stay with it.

as for spyware programs?
not a issue really as i have used 2 or 3 at sometimes
i generally run 2
i do know for example that spybot and adaware together you'll get a warning thing which just says you have it running but they work fine

Using two spyware programs shouldn't be a problem. Only run one of them at a time, but they can both be on your computer. You shouldn't have had a problem with the two anitvirus programs either, unless they were both trying to do a scan at the same time.

I use three antispyware program because no one program can detect all spyware. There's a good list of free ones here.

Generally it's not a problem. However, if one program quarantines a file, the other program may detect in in a scan - still, not generally a big issue.
