you learn not just to tense muscles to take a blow but also to channel the directed energy away AND how to release the air from your lungs. Not just exhaling but a controlled release. You will need more back ground to go any further.

In the martial arts, one can learn to redirect energy away from the point of impact, so that the full blow isn't received. Also, enough practice receiving blows strengthens the stomach muscles so that they automatically tense at the moment of impact, kinda like all the defenders of the castle running against the front doors just as the enemy army attacks it. The force opposing is negated by the sudden rush of force brought forward.

I would think that the outcome would be different if the man wasn't expecting the girls to jump on his stomach. The sudden attack would, to use the army analogy again, bring more weight against the door than is guarding it. The doors would break through and the army would rush the castle, or the pressure would either break ribs or cause the stomach to rupture or any number of other nasty scenarios.
