I have heard that it's up the the drivers discretion. If you have a porch or they have somewhere to put it that's not very visible to the road, they will probably leave it. If it is of high value, or there is nowhere safe to leave it, they will leave a note or make another attempt the next day.

The shipper specifies. The shipper can restrict delivery so that a person must receive the package in which case, they leave a notice with a phone number to call so you can pick up the package after the truck gats back to the disribution point, or as an alternative, they attempt delivery the next day. If there are no restrictions on receipt, they may just leave the package on your doorstep. High value or pilferable items are usually restricted to delivery to a person to avoid a package getting stolen from the front porch.

It really depends.

If you are in an apartment complex, they usually leave it at the office.

If you are in a home, they give you one or two more shots to be there when they are (IF they need a signature) then they give you a notice to where you can pick the package up. If they don't need a signature they might just leave it on your doorstep.

Leave a note telling you what location the package will be able to be picked up at.
