I am 13 weeks pregnant and I have some chest congestion and it's due to a cold. I have an appointment tomorrow but does anyone know if there is something mild that I can take in the meantime to provide some comfort? Let me know, thanks.

You can take REGULAR tussin, NO letters after it. Ask the pharmisist. It will help the congestion to loosen, so when you do cough its more productive, resulting in you coughing less.

Flushing your nose out with saline solution is also a great idea. Helps keep more post nasal drip from ending up in your lungs and causing infection.

I had a broncial infection at 30 weeks, so iam not making this up.

Dont take any other decongestants or cough supressants, NONE, not even the tylenol ones. Theyre bad for the baby.

Me and the person above me are talking about the same medication. :) The common name is often tussin.

I am in the same boat but my doctor put me on an antibiotic. I know you can take Tylenol and Sudafed. My doctor told me last week that Robitussin is a class C drug which means that there are not alot of studies done yet on weather it will hurt the baby or not. He did however say that it might be safe as long as you used it sparingly and not for any length of time. I did not end up using it.

Good luck

I spent yesterday driving around pharmacys with my daughter with same problem who is 9 weeks pregnant, ended up going to local shop and buying tunes and soothers, you could also try inhaling some steam as this helps a great deal and cant harm baby at all

Best thing until you see your doc would be just to steam, get a large bowl and half fill it with boiling hot water, if you have any menthol rub put a small amount in. put a towel over your head and put your face over the bowl and inhale. Dont open your eyes as it will make them water. It really does help, even without the menthol.

Rule of thumb: Cough dry? Dextromethoriphan (Robatussin DM)

Cough gooey? Guafennesin (Regular Robatussin)

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if either of those OTC medications carry a risk to unborn babies. I don't think they do.
Decongestants and antihistimines DO carry some risk so stay away from those OTC meds.

I'm sure there is probably something you can take but when I was pregnant I wouldn't take anything unless it was Tylenol. Be sure and do not use cough drops, there is something about them that is not good for a pregnant woman.

Go ahead and take some expectorant cough syrup (guaifenesin). It won't hurt you. Tylenol is a pain reliever, and that's all. It won't help your congestion.

Try theriflu before you go to sleep and that should help. It wont hurt the baby if you anly do it a few times. And its fairly mild.
