A couple of issues:

The airlines want you to hand-carry a laptop rather than check it. Because if it breaks in baggage handling, you'll be pissed, they won't want to pay, etc. That said, I've done it often, but in a large semi-rigid duffle well wrapped in clothes and padding.

You are allowed "one carry-on plus one personal item". The personal item can be a purse or small handbag or laptop or briefcase. But only one of those. So get or borrow a laptop case, and have everything else in a carry-on bag. I like a largish bookbag so my hands are free.

I've also carried my laptop on board in a bookbag. You do have to take it out and put it in its own tray for the Xray machine, regardless of what case it is in.

Your laptop battery is only good for 3-4 hours probably. I have an extra battery for that reason, but most people don't. There aren't power points on domestic flights. Only on trans-oceanic flights and then often only in first/business class. So you can recharge the battery in the terminal before you board, but it isn't going to provide 10 hours of amusement on the flight.

Remember your wall charger for the laptop and I'd bring it on the flight. In case you get stuck in Denver (ha!) for 5 hours or 3 days. Also bring a 3 to 1 plug splitter for the 120-volt plug. In case someone got to the outlet before you, I've always found them willing to share.

Alaska Airlines and some others rent "Digiplayers" with 20 or so movies on them for $10. You don't have to charge it, haul it, or rent the movies for it. They last 5-6 hours. You can reserve them in advance.

There's also a DVD rental outfit in the ANC airport. If they have a branch in your departure airport, you could rent a player/movie and then drop it off (near gate C3) in ANC. Check www.inmotionpictures.com for locations. They seem to be ATL, DEN, DFW, LAX, SFO, SEA, EWR, MSP, MCO, MIA, etc - most anywhere you might be orginating.

Hope that helps.

Games are hard to play on the plane because there isn't much room. I say leave it all behind. Sleep on the plane and enjoy your vacation.
