It means it is still in testing and development.
The provider doesn't promise it will work.
You are helping test it for them.

current versions of all software have beta additions. these are the test versions put out for free for people to use, report what isn't working, andprovide fixes if they can to fix the bugs which are incorporated into the final version of the software. berta version always run for about a year and are free to most, though some are restricted to certain people such as it pros and programmers. two examples are vista beta, and yahoo mail beta. vista while still out there as beta, is no longer available from ms. the final release version comes out in january. yahoo mail beta is still being downloaded and has many problems to be resolved. the final version will be ready some time next year. that's when it'll have most of the bugs fixed, and wortking very well. i wouldn't rush to get vista, ( pirated software is already being sold from china, and is developed from the beta version). unless you want to waste money now on cheap knockoff software, wait a few months before getting it, unless it's from a volume dealer as a low-cost upgrade when you purchase a new computer. then don't rush to install it, since it may have some problems not yet discovered and updates become available to resolve these little problems.
some betas are really good, but the final version is the best bet when you decide to upgrade. for most users, betas are good to see if you might want the final version. you can even suggest they add features you would like to have which the beta doesn't have. and if you provide the fix, they do give credit to you for it, though not in money.

What beta means is that the program is in the user testing phase. What some companies do is instead of just releasing a piece of software without knowing how it will work in the 'real world'. They will release a beta version of their software and have people give feedback on what works, what doesn't work, how things could be improved, and the company tweaks it according.

A beta version or beta release usually represents the first version of a computer program that implements all features in the initial requirements analysis. It is likely to be useful for internal demonstrations and previews to select customers, but unstable and not yet ready for release. Some developers refer to this stage as a preview, as a technical preview (TP) or as an early access.

beta version is what the software engineers call a program which is still under development. think of it as a building ''under construction''. even though it is undergoing construction, it can be tried by users and therefore they know in which ways it needs to completely develop. then it is no more beta.
''building under constructon'' - building or property being built
''beta''---- software being built
