My favorite is T-Bag from PrisonBreak. no, he's nothing like me. hes a serial murder/rapist/kidnapper. Hes killed about 8 people in 2 seasons, plus the guys he killed before getting caught.
What i admire about T-Bag is his guts, his brains, and his resourcefulness, his ability to get out of sticky situations.
T-Bag was hated by the other characters from early on, but he never gave up once he heard about the escape. he did everything he could to make sure that he was over that wall.
T-Bag has traveled cross country since broken out of prison, with no cash, playing the role of a kindhearted veteren. He can truly deceive anyone. My favorite part of the second season is when he managed to steal $5 million from the other characters. While they were stashing the money in a bag, he filled anothers' bag with magazines, while he filled his with $$$$. this was ingenious to me.
T-Bag has had 2 run ins with the police since broken out of prison, and he is yet to be captured. there was even one scenario where a woman was staring at him, but also a picture of his mugshot. he is still on the loose.
in conclusion, t-bag is a great PrisonBreak character, and he is one of my primary reasons for still watching.

I don't really watch the idiot box anymore... So, sadly I do not really have the time to offer an opinion. However, I do watch CSI from time to time... And I must say, I like Lieutenant Horatio Caine (of CSI: Miami). I see the humour in his sarcasm and his voice sounds awesome! And of course, there's always the famous Gil Grisson (CSI: Las Vegas) ... Everyone knows him! He's absolutely perfect for the role he plays.

Strangely Raymond comes to mind. Maybe because I have an emotionally needy mother.
But yes, you have a good point. there has to be something very recognizable and familiar for us to like a TV character

It would have to be Darlene from "Roseanne." When her character was in the "dark solitary phase" of her life I was in the same mood, so there I connected. Honestly though, she was the best character, besides Roseanne, that could get me to laugh everytime.

That would be Captain James Tiberius Kirk. We are not alike. He is more like an idol. Captain, Scientist, explorer, womanizer, butt-kicker, diplomat......what a life that would be.
