OK, well, firstly, lets get the easy and quick things done with.

Go into start menu and click run, in the box type in msconfig and then click run. this will pop open a window, in the tabs click startup, and uncheck anything you know isn't needed when you start your computer. you can expand the command part of it and see where it's starting from, things like Quicktime, RealPlayer, and others aren't necessary to startup, but if you don't know anything about it, I suggest to leave it alone.

Next thing to do is run Add/Remove programs form the Control Panel. take off anything that you plain don't use anymore like the software for your friend's scanner that he needed to use once on your computer (example) once done, exit out of that.

If your PC is still running slow, use disk defragmenter on your drives, it will feel slower on the first restart, but after that it will be improved.
Hope this helps :)

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

There may be too many programs running in the background that you don't know are there.
If your laptop is still under warranty, call Tech. Support. They should be able to help you run msconfig and make unneccessary programs not run on startup.

you may have programs that are automatically opening once you start up if you have too many or any for that matter loading upon start up then thats probably your main problem. click on the programs that are starting right away when you turn on your computer or start it up and go to its options and uncheck the "start at start up" option, it may not say those exact words, but hopefully you get where i am going with that... goodluck<3
