What is a lion with wings called? I know what a griffin, or gryphon, is, but I was pretty sure there was a special name or term for a winged lion.

A winged lion with a human head (like the Babylonians sculpted) is called a Lamassu.

A lion body with an eagle head and wings is a griffin (Greek mythology).

A lion body with a man or woman's head is called a sphinx. Sometimes theese were depicted with wings, too.

I couldn't find a name for a regular lion with wings, except "winged lion."

No, there is no special name for a winged lion. A Griffin is actually part lion and part hawk. The sphynx was sometimes depicted as winged, but that was a lion with a human head, usually female, but sometimes male. A straight winged lion is not a classic mythological animal.

Called Shedu in some cultures mythology, called King Moonracer in Rudolph, called The Lion of Venice( there is a statue there), it is the symbol of St. Mark, a patron of saint of the Republic.

*winces at her own geek-dom* Because it's not technically a gryphon, the folks in the gryphon guild distinguish winged lions from other critters by calling it a flion, or flyon.

Not at all historical, but it works.

I haven't heard a specific name for it. It is a figure taken from the visions of Daniel in the Bible. It is said to represent the strength of man or the city of Babylon.
