I do not have a phone line so I am assuming I need to go with a cable modem, correct? I want to make sure that I know what I am doing to get this all set up correctly. Also, any suggestions on a wireless router? Not too expensive!

You'll have to have a wireless card for your laptop (check to see if one is built in). Also, you'll need a router and of course the modem that you can either purchase or obtain from the cable company. I got all my stuff from BestBuy because they have excellent rebates (linksys).

Shop around for the router, Linksys makes a good router. I have one of my own. But you will probably end up paying about 60 to 80 dollars for a good router. If you don't already have wireless capability built in to the laptop you can get one from wal-mart for about 35 dollars. I have belkin wireless adapter for my laptop and it works good. Before you go through the expense of buying a router and and broadband internet, see if there is a wireless network in the area you live. You may be able to connect to the internet that way, most wireless networks are unsecure and anyone can connect to them. There are also hot spots all over the country and probably in your city where you live. Don't feel guilty about using them to get internet. There is currently no law against that I am aware of so try that route could save you some money.

Make sure your cable company has Internet available first. When you order the Internet service, specify that you want a wireless modem. Ask if they have a wireless card available to insert into your laptop. If not Walmart.staples, bestbuy can fix you up with what you need.
