I had to shower my last year of high school in 1986. My daughter, in her first year of high school - 2006 does not. I don't know why. But yes, she does smell sweaty and says a lot of other kids do too.
Everything is PC now, you know that. No more retarded kids, cripples, janitors, trash collectors, housewives, blacks, whites, orientals. Now we have mentally challenged, differently abled, sanitation engineers, domestic engineeers, African-Americans, Caucasians, Asian-Americans.
No more dodgeball either! It was dangerous and made kids cry. No more picking for teams, those who didn't get picked would have low self esteem. No more sending valentines to who you love, now you must send them to everyone, even your enemies. No more handing out invitations to your b-day parties, you must surreptitiously mail them out if you're not inviting everyone in the class - OR everyone must be invited. Wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings.
Childhood is a particularly brutal time and it's impossible to shield your child from all bad vibes. Communal showering was embarrassing, sure, but it sure was a good way to see the different varieties, shapes, colors and sizes of different people which was good information when you are a teenager.

I think there's a lot of issues with that question. First, schools are always expanding and don't always have the funding to build showers. Next, schools can't always sacrifice the time it takes for kids to shower because they need to "teach the test." Last, there are so many "PC" concerns, that kids don't really do the rough and tumble games that we used to. They learn more games and their gym classes are less of a physical release. That's also why kids are acting out more in class. I agree with you, I think we'd all be a lot better if kids could run around more and play, shout, and have fun and then shower afterwards. They'd be calmer and not to mention cleaner for the rest of the day.

I don't know when kids stopped having to shower, but you're right--there are some stinky kids sitting in class! Even worse, some of them think spraying deodorant on a sweaty body makes things better. Yuck!
Some kids say that their gym has only group showers (not individual stalls) and they don't want to shower there, and some gym teachers say that 55 minutes minus the time to dress for class minus the time to get dressed in school clothes again is already way too short.
I thought it was just my school!

When parents started to complain. Yes, they should still take a shower but the boys in the locker rooms can be rough. Parents find out about some of the activities going on, or one kid feels insecure and the whole school stops.

I agree we never had to take showers after Gym! We never had the time. I had Gym first period of the day. I had to get up shower get dressed, go to school get undress, put on my gym cloths, play gym,get undress then put my regular clothes back on. I hated gym and do not think that kids should be forced to do gym in order to graduate!

It's not that people have been wimpy but the world aint what it used to be and having naked students supervised by teachers is innapropirate in today's society. We just wet towels and wiped up, put on more deoderant and it was fine.

I never showered at the school. I was in a school that was littered with bullies and the last thing i wanted was those bullies looking at my swingables in the shower and making fun of them too.

i dont no. we dont. we have showers but they arnt used. i think its because we have a tiny school, 7 periods, and too many kids. we dont have enough time too. we only have 43 min of PE and by law you have to have at least 45 min everyday of PE. (in school) and we barely have that

I don't have to.
And quite frankly, I'm glad.
No one actually smells bad after gym. If you just put on deodorant, then you're fine. Besides, what if my hair or makeup got messed up? I'd be pretty pissed.
