brake or the car is idling. Yesterday I noticed there was quite a lot
of white smoke coming from the exhaust. Any ideas, hopefully just a tune up needed

It may stall due to a blockage or build up in the system. White smoke is okay because it's winter and it's only condensation burning away. I'd say take it to a mechanic and have it looked at but you don't know who to trust these days. Try your local BMW dealer. Might be a little more expensive but hopefully you'll not get ripped off. Oh before I forget blue smoke is oil burning in the system, possibly piston rings. Let it run for a bit get out and have a look.

If you press on the brake and the idle drops way off, you are losing vacuum. It is possible that the brake booster diaphragm is leaking inside the booster housing and also sucking a bit of brake fluid into the intake manifold, where it's getting burned in the engine.

Is you brake fluid level OK?

Try disconnecting the big hose to the brake booster housing, plugging the hose, then start the car and see how it runs.

I bet the smoke from the exhaust was white, that is condensation. The stalling may just be a temporary glitch due to damp weather, if it persists take it to a reputable garage for a tune. Doesn't sound too serious if it only happens sometimes.

its hard when you feel trouble is brewing, as things that may not really be connected all seem to point one way.
If you have the tool just unscrew one of the spark plugs, in the back of the haynes manual there is a chart, that shows symtoms v plug wear and that may give a clue.
Regarding the smoke, it may be condensation at this time of year, but may also be signs of piston ring or valve guide wear, try driving down a hill and then accelerating up another...see what happens in the way of smoking..this will give a clue if it gets worse on acceleration.
Did you check the air filter...could be that, or a damaged breather hose
Best of all though to get it checked..early action may save heartache later

Usually when a BMW stalls its normally showing signs of an O-2 sensor. Just in case check your pcv valve. When you pull it out of the valve cover and it doesn't make any noise, then its probably clogged. Blowing white smoke is usually a sign of your oil rings are going. It could be your valve guides and seals as well.

It might need a tune up, might be idling too low. The white smoke could be moisture. Blue is oil, black means it is running too rich.

Check the spark plugs and plug wires, especially if you use any kind of fuel additives. A full tune up probably wouldn't hurt either, but replacing the spark plugs and plug wires is the cheapest thing to do that might resolve your problem and you can do it yourself in about an hour.

It sounds like water is getting into the oil, could be the head gasket about to go.
